I think the abandoned garage on hwy 101 is the old Erickson’s mill. Is there a smokestack to the left of it? You see, I grew up out there. My mom packed shakes there back in the day when she was young and buff!

I never noticed a sign in Barstow, but I’d bet anything there’s a sign reading “Wilmington, NC, 2,478 miles”. I travel through Barstow every few years. I’ll be sure to keep a lookout for such a sign next time I’m there. I’ve also been through Wilmington a bunch. It really puts into perspective how long I-40 is, and how different the landscapes are at each end. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

i came across your blog and just love it! i had to comment on this picture/post, as i saw the Barstow, CA sign in the background, I live in NC on the coast and at the start of I-40, there is a sign that says “Barstow California, 2,478 miles” I wonder if there is one in Barstow that says “Wilmington, North Carolina 2,000 miles”…?

I plan on hiking this trail this summer, I’ll be sure to have plenty of water – rule in desert is at least 1 litre/mile you hike

Matt, this picture speaks volumes to me. I was close to both of my grandmothers, but one of them was like a second mom to me. I knew all of the lines and wrinkles in her face, as well as the expressions and moods her face revealed. Not long ago I was given a dream that allowed me to hug her and to thank her for being that second mom to me.
Thank you for being the kind of man that not only loved his Grandma and brought her face to life in a drawing but also one who is willing to share her memory with others.
